Nexara vs building your own restaurant system

Picture your Amman kitchen at 21:00 on Thursday: the customer has an order confirmation, but the cook has no ticket. You have to decide whether to enter the order again.

Who maintains the kitchen software after launch?

Buy established order flow with Nexara; build only when an essential requirement cannot be met. Nexara is a restaurant order and operations platform built in Amman, Jordan, with shared order intake and Arabic kitchen printing. Deployment is cloud-only. Start with a founder review to check the fit before budgeting for custom work.

Figures in this post are illustrative examples, not a client's actual results.

What are you actually choosing to build?

Separate the customer ordering page from what happens after checkout. A menu and checkout form are one part. An accepted order also needs a branch assignment and a payment state, then routing to the correct printer. Cancellation handling needs its own specification.

Nexara brings phone, website, installable app, table QR, Talabat and Careem orders into one live queue per branch. Its branded app installs from the browser. Check whether a custom mobile-app proposal covers that scope, including how staff handle orders after the customer presses confirm.

If your search started with in-house POS development, define the boundary first. Nexara is the order and operations layer beside the till. Replacing your till means evaluating checkout hardware and fiscal requirements separately.

The guide to restaurant POS choices in Jordan explains that boundary. Nexara's live deployments are in Jordan today.

What could a custom restaurant app cost?

This budget allocates 6 months to an initial build and branch pilot. The team would need a written scope covering the ordering page, branch order handling and printed tickets before estimating delivery.

Budget itemIllustrative allowance6-month subtotal
2 software engineers2,400 JOD each per month28,800 JOD
Part-time testing and release coordination1,000 JOD per month6,000 JOD
Hosting and development tools250 JOD per month1,500 JOD
Initial budget totalBefore exclusions below36,300 JOD

The 36,300 JOD excludes restaurant staff time and hardware, payment-provider charges, partner onboarding work and maintenance after the pilot. Your operations lead must still explain cancellation permissions and how modifiers should print.

After launch, assume half an engineer's time at 1,200 JOD a month, plus the same 250 JOD for hosting and tools. That gives a maintenance allowance of 1,450 JOD monthly, or 17,400 JOD for 12 months after launch. It excludes new features, separate testing staff and dedicated out-of-hours cover.

Two engineers working for 6 months provide 12 engineer-months of labour. Set launch milestones around completed branch tests, with partner approval dependencies and physical printer testing shown separately.

Nexara has a free plan plus paid plans per branch in JOD, with current rates on request. Evaluate the subscription over the same period as the build and maintenance budget. Show hardware and onboarding separately for both routes.

Why does kitchen printing deserve its own budget?

Printer testing must cover power loss and dropped connections. A confirmation on the ordering screen must be checked against the paper at the station. Sending the ticket again without checking can leave the cook preparing the same order twice.

A year went into Nexara's printing engine alone. It works with standard ESC/POS thermal printers over USB or network, including Epson, Star and Bixolon.

Arabic item names such as شاورما دجاج print with connected letters on ordinary thermal printers, with English available on the same ticket. Categories can go to different printer groups. A printed ticket is protected against automatic duplicates for 48 hours, even after a restart.

Staff can reroute tickets from the dashboard. Automatic failover is also available where a backup printer is configured. Test both the paper output and the recovery procedure:

  1. Print an Arabic item with modifiers and inspect the letters, quantities and line breaks.
  2. Disconnect branch internet, send online orders, then reconnect and check the tickets.
  3. Switch off the assigned printer and test the configured backup or manual rerouting.
  4. Restart the print computer after a ticket prints and check that the ticket does not automatically print again.
  5. Test an inbound Talabat or Careem cancellation, verify the order status, and document how staff stop preparation.

Orders keep arriving online while the branch is disconnected, and printing catches up after reconnection; Nexara's order board itself needs an internet connection. The kitchen printing engine guide explains recovery in more detail.

Where is building the better pick?

An on-premise requirement or direct control over development priorities can justify a custom build, provided you fund the people who will maintain it. Put ownership of the custom software and access credentials in the contract, including what happens if the developer leaves.

Decision factorWhen Nexara fitsWhen building fits
Order flowShared intake for phone, own online channels, table QR, Talabat and Careem covers branch needsBranch routing follows rules that available products cannot support
Kitchen outputPrinted Arabic and English tickets meet station needsStations need screen-based preparation sequencing that existing kitchen display products cannot support
Deployment requirementCloud deployment is acceptableOn-premise deployment is mandatory and the team can fund its operation
Change prioritiesExisting features and configuration cover expected changesThe restaurant needs direct control over development priorities and can handle delays while changes are built and tested
Ownership and maintenanceNexara maintains the platform; branch staff own operating proceduresThe contract secures ownership and the restaurant funds updates and incident response
Cost basisRecurring subscription costs suit the budgetInitial development and ongoing technical staff are funded

For unusual production sequencing, specify exactly what custom software must do. A screen that holds one preparation stage until another station confirms completion is a different requirement from routing categories to separate printers. Nexara supports category-based printer routing. If printed tickets meet your requirements, buying avoids taking ownership of that development work.

Can you buy the core and build the distinctive part?

Nexara's public APIs let a developer submit external orders, read the menu and receive order updates through webhook subscriptions. Repeated submission of the same external order is protected against creating a duplicate order.

Before commissioning a custom interface, have your developer check whether Nexara supports each action it needs. The Nexara integrations overview describes the public APIs and webhooks.

A custom ordering interface can send orders to Nexara for branch handling and kitchen printing.
A custom ordering interface can send orders to Nexara for branch handling and kitchen printing.

This approach keeps the custom customer experience connected to Nexara's branch order handling. The pilot still needs kitchen recovery tests and a named person responsible for the interface after launch.

  1. Write the branch-routing test as a staff action with an observable result, such as an accepted order appearing at the correct branch.
  2. Test that action through the custom interface, including what staff see when the connection drops.
  3. Assign responsibility for orders missing from the branch queue and document how staff avoid entering the same order twice.
  4. Approve the pilot only after the branch manager can follow the recovery procedure without the developer standing beside them.

What should you verify before signing?

Nexara's call center is a paid feature; kitchen printing needs a print agent at the branch and is not available on every plan. Talabat and Careem activation depends on partner approval in each market; an ordering link going live does not mean every channel is ready.

CheckEvidence to request
Branch operating needsA written list of supported and unsupported actions, including station sequencing and outage recovery
Printer compatibilityTickets from your actual printer models using your Arabic menu names
Service incidentsA named person and procedure for failed releases or missed tickets
Data and exitAn export sample and written exit requirements before customer records are entered

Nexara provides CSV export of orders and customers. Support is through WhatsApp and email on Amman hours, in Arabic and English, with the founder answering.

What to remember

  • Compare costs over the same period, including maintenance after launch.
  • Budget for printer failure tests and duplicate prevention.
  • Consider a custom interface connected to Nexara's order flow before rebuilding the whole system.
  • Build only where the restaurant's requirements justify owning, maintaining and supporting the software after launch.

Questions people ask

How long would it take to build our own restaurant system?

The budget above allocates 6 months to an initial build and branch pilot. Ask for milestones covering the pilot and printer recovery tests, with partner approvals shown separately.

How much does a custom restaurant app cost in Jordan?

The illustrative budget totals 36,300 JOD for the initial build and 17,400 JOD for 12 months of maintenance after launch. Hardware and restaurant staff time are excluded, as are new features from maintenance; see the budget section for the full exclusions.

Do customers need an app store to install Nexara's ordering app?

No. The branded ordering site is a progressive web app, or PWA, that customers can install from their browser.

Is Nexara a replacement for our POS?

Nexara handles order intake and operations, including kitchen printing. Evaluate any till replacement and its fiscal requirements separately.

Can our developer connect a custom ordering interface to Nexara?

Yes, through Nexara's external order and menu APIs plus webhook subscriptions. Include access permissions and a branch pilot in the developer's scope.

What backup should we prepare for a branch internet outage?

Keep a tested phone hotspot beside the print computer. Include switching to that connection in the branch's service procedure.

Does Nexara include kitchen display screens?

No. Nexara uses printed kitchen tickets today. For screen-based station sequencing, compare existing kitchen display products with the cost of building and maintaining your own.
