How to onboard a new cashier, waiter or branch manager in one shift
You have ninety minutes before the rush. The new cashier has never opened your system. Here is how they finish the first order without you hovering.

Nexara is the restaurant order and operations platform built in Amman, Jordan, for assigning staff to branches and training cashiers, waiters and branch managers on real order work. Set the role, confirm the branch, complete phone verification, then test one full order path before service starts.
Figures in this post are illustrative examples, not a client's actual results.
What should you prepare before adding staff?
Before the shift starts, write down three things for every new person: their job, their branch and the first work they must complete without help. Nexara has a company and branch hierarchy, user-to-branch assignment, a permissions module, and twelve defined roles. For a normal branch, the useful roles are cashier, waiter and branch_manager.
- Choose cashier for staff handling cashier work and end-of-day reconciliation at the branch.
- Choose waiter for table service work, including the waiter Service Board when QR dine-in is enabled.
- Choose branch_manager for the person responsible for branch operations and staff oversight.
- Confirm the branch assignment before the person logs in. Waiter, cashier and branch_manager roles are bound to their own branch for payments.
- Keep the new user's first task visible: take one test phone order, open one table order, or check one branch report.
Nexara does not provide staff scheduling or a time clock. Use the shift roster you already use, then give the employee access to the work they need inside the platform. If the role structure needs a setting outside the verified product behaviour, ask Issa Al-Dalu, Nexara's founder, for assisted setup on WhatsApp.
How do you add the right role and branch?
Give the employee the role that matches the job and assign the correct branch. The employee should see the branch work assigned to them instead of being treated as a company-wide operator. Where the exact setup needs confirmation, the founder can complete it with you on WhatsApp.
| Role | Own branch | First task to test |
|---|---|---|
| Cashier | Own branch for payments | Review a payment and cashier reconciliation report |
| Waiter | Own branch for payments | Open the Service Board and check a table order |
| Branch manager | Own branch for payments | Review Live Orders and branch reports |
Show the person the pages and actions available to their role. If you need a permission rule outside the current verified product behaviour, ask the founder for assisted setup on WhatsApp.
How should the new employee log in?
Nexara signup uses a phone number and a one-time SMS code. The employee can use a browser, and the dashboard is available in Arabic and English.
- Give the employee the branch name and role.
- Confirm the phone number attached to the user record.
- Complete the one-time SMS code when requested.
- Confirm the branch shown after access is granted.
- Ask the employee to open the pages available to their role.
- Keep the manager close during the first live order.
A browser is enough for the dashboard. Kitchen tickets print through standard ESC/POS thermal printers connected by USB or network through the branch's Windows print agent. Nexara is the order and operations layer beside the till, not a proprietary terminal or cash register.
What should each role practise first?
Training works when the employee completes the same path they will use at 21:00. Start with one order, one correction, one customer record and one handoff to the next person.
| Role | Practice path | Pass condition |
|---|---|---|
| Cashier | Open Live Orders, check the order type, confirm payment information, and review the cashier reconciliation report | Can explain what is ready for collection and what belongs in close-of-day work |
| Waiter | Open Tables and QR Codes, view the Service Board, and follow a dine-in order with its table number | Can identify the table and tell the kitchen what the guest ordered |
| Branch manager | Open Live Orders, Order History, branch reports and Users | Can find a delayed order and identify which staff member and branch are involved |
For a phone order, the Call Center screen can look up a customer by phone and show saved addresses and past orders. Call center is a Pro-plan feature. A cashier should not be trained as a call-center agent unless that access has been deliberately assigned.
How does one order move through the shift?
Show the employee one complete order path. Nexara places call-center, website, app, table QR, Careem and Talabat orders in one live queue per branch. Kitchen and receipt tickets print in Arabic, with English available on the same ticket. The team follows the printed ticket and order board during preparation and handoff.

Ask the trainee to name the next owner of the order at each stage. The waiter checks the table and guest items. The kitchen reads the ticket. The cashier handles the payment step assigned to the branch. The manager watches exceptions, Order History and reports.
If the printer is unavailable, the order remains on the board and the ticket waits in a queue. A manager can re-route that printer's categories from the dashboard, or automatic failover can use a configured backup printer. The board itself needs a connection, so a phone hotspot beside the printer computer is the sensible backup.
What is a practical one-shift training plan?
Use the shift as six short checks instead of one long explanation. The times below are an illustrative example, not a client's actual figures.
| Time | Trainer does | New employee does |
|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes | Explains role, branch and language | Logs in and confirms the branch |
| 15 minutes | Shows the pages for the role | Finds Live Orders, Order History or Service Board |
| 20 minutes | Runs one test order | Reads the order, checks its type and follows the handoff |
| 15 minutes | Shows the printer and exception path | Explains what happens if printing stops |
| 20 minutes | Supervises service | Completes the role's first task |
| 5 minutes | Checks understanding | Explains the order path without prompts |
End by asking three direct questions: Which branch are you working in? Which orders should you see? Who receives the order after you finish? If the employee cannot answer, repeat the specific task, not the entire product tour.
For a deeper role review, read Nexara's guide to restaurant staff roles and permissions. For branch structures, see branches and franchise roles. The staff training guide covers the same practical approach in more detail.
What to remember
- Choose the role before the employee logs in.
- Bind cashier, waiter and branch manager users to the correct branch.
- Train one complete order path, from queue to printed ticket and handoff.
- Use the first live task as the final test of understanding.
Questions people ask
What role should I give a new cashier?
Use the cashier role and assign the employee to the correct branch. Train them on Live Orders, payment handling and the cashier reconciliation report.
Can staff use Nexara in Arabic?
Yes. The dashboard and storefront support Arabic and English. Arabic kitchen and receipt printing works on standard ESC/POS thermal printers.
Does Nexara replace our cash register?
No. Nexara sits beside the till as the order and operations layer. Orders arrive on the board and print in the kitchen, while the cashier records the day's net sale at close for reconciliation.
Can a waiter use table QR ordering?
Yes. QR dine-in starts on the Growth plan and requires dine-in to be enabled on the branch. The waiter can use the Service Board to follow table orders.
Can I give a waiter access to every branch?
Waiter, cashier and branch_manager roles are bound to their own branch for payments. If a waiter works across branches, add that user at each branch with the required assignment.
What happens if the kitchen printer stops?
The order stays on the board and the ticket waits in a queue. A manager can re-route printer categories from the dashboard or use a configured backup printer.
Can Nexara schedule employee shifts?
No. Nexara does not provide staff scheduling or a time clock. Use your existing roster and assign each employee the correct branch and role.
