When the restaurant internet goes down: what keeps working

The kitchen printer goes quiet. Delivery orders may still be coming in, so check what has stopped before someone starts entering the same orders again.

Internet down. What keeps working?

Nexara, a restaurant order and operations platform built in Amman, Jordan, keeps print jobs waiting for reconnection during a branch internet outage. Orders can keep arriving if the cloud and ordering channels remain available. The order board needs internet; use a phone hotspot to reconnect the printer PC and check waiting orders.

What does it mean when a supplier says its POS works offline?

It depends on which function the supplier means. A till might record a sale locally without being able to authorise a card payment. A printer might remain reachable over USB while the computer cannot reach the cloud. Those are different capabilities, and neither proves that the whole restaurant can work offline.

Nexara sits beside the till as the order and operations layer. Its live board brings website, app, phone, table QR, Talabat and Careem orders into one queue per branch. Nexara does not provide an offline cash register or offline order entry.

Treat “cloud POS offline mode” as the start of a test. Ask the supplier to disconnect the internet and demonstrate the exact task you need. Test receiving an external order separately from printing an existing ticket: each needs a different connection.

What keeps working during a branch internet outage?

A branch internet outage is different from a cloud service outage. If the cloud and ordering channels remain available, orders can keep arriving in Nexara while your branch is disconnected. A branch backup connection cannot restore an unavailable cloud service. The danger during a branch outage is operational: a customer may have placed an order that nobody in your kitchen has seen yet.

A guest using mobile data may still reach your ordering website while your branch broadband is down. Order acceptance in the cloud and the kitchen receiving a ticket are separate events. Check both before telling a customer that preparation has started.

What happens to waiting kitchen tickets?

Nexara Printing runs on the branch's printer PC and prints kitchen tickets on standard ESC/POS thermal printers over USB or the local network. Staff can receive Arabic and English tickets on these printers.

Waiting tickets print once after reconnection, when Nexara Printing is running and the printer is available. A staff-requested reprint produces an extra copy, so mark it clearly and tell the kitchen why it was requested.

During a branch outage, tickets wait until the branch reconnects and its printer is available.

The offline printing guide explains what happens to waiting tickets. Test your separate payment terminal's outage procedure with its supplier.

How should you use a phone hotspot?

A hotspot gives the branch computer another route to the internet through a mobile network. Test it with the actual printer PC before service, because getting a browser online and keeping a network printer reachable are separate checks.

  1. Check mobile data first. Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone and load a fresh page. A hotspot needs a usable mobile data connection.
  2. Connect the printer PC to the hotspot using a connection method the PC supports. Keep Nexara Printing running so waiting tickets can reach the printer.
  3. Open the Nexara order board on a connected device. Confirm you are looking at the correct branch and review orders that arrived during the gap.
  4. Check the printer path. A USB printer remains physically connected to the PC; a network printer still needs a reachable local network path. Moving the PC to a hotspot can change that path.
  5. Confirm actual printing. Check paper and printer power, then verify a ticket reaches the intended station.
  6. Keep the phone powered and check its data allowance. Give one person responsibility for the backup connection so it does not leave the restaurant in someone's pocket.

For a network-printer setup, have your installer test whether the PC can use the hotspot while retaining access to the printer network. Write down the tested connection steps beside the printer PC so the next shift can repeat them.

What if the printer, rather than the internet, has failed?

A working order board with a silent printer points to a different check from a disconnected branch. Start with paper and printer power, then check the local connection. A hotspot will not repair a USB cable or power a thermal printer.

In Nexara, the order stays on the board and the ticket waits in the print queue. From a connected dashboard, you can re-route that printer's categories to another printer. Automatic failover can also select a backup printer where one is configured.

Use the printer failover guide to plan which station receives those categories. A backup printer is useful only if staff know where its tickets go. Agree who carries a kitchen ticket printed at the cashier station.

What should you test before the next outage?

Run a controlled rehearsal outside service. Disconnect the internet connection without switching off the local router or printer PC. That tests broadband loss separately from a power failure. A full power cut stops equipment that has no backup power.

  • Record the last order the kitchen received before disconnection, using its order number.
  • Restore access through the backup connection and inspect the branch board for unseen orders.
  • Confirm that waiting tickets print at the intended stations.
  • Return to the normal connection and verify both the board and printer again.

For the manual fallback, record order details and payment status on paper. Assign one person to compare that record with printed tickets and Nexara order history after reconnection, marking what has been prepared and entering only orders missing from Nexara.

For a branch-specific check, use the WhatsApp step below to contact Nexara founder Issa Al-Dalu at nexaratech.io. Send your printer connection type and backup internet arrangement, and ask to walk through an outage test.

What to remember

  • A silent kitchen printer does not mean incoming orders have stopped.
  • Nexara keeps print work waiting for reconnection; its order board needs internet.
  • A hotspot must reconnect the printer PC while preserving its printer connection.
  • Rehearse broadband loss separately from printer failure or a power cut.

Questions people ask

Does Nexara work without internet?

The order board needs internet. During a branch disconnection, print jobs wait and the printer catches up when the printer PC reconnects and the printer is available.

Will Talabat and Careem orders stop if my restaurant loses internet?

Losing your branch connection does not itself stop Talabat and Careem orders from reaching Nexara. Reconnect the branch to see and print orders received during the gap.

Can I take new orders on an offline Nexara screen?

New orders need a connection to reach Nexara. Use a connected device or your branch's documented manual fallback.

Will reconnecting print every ticket twice?

Waiting tickets print once after reconnection. Staff can still request manual reprints, which produce extra copies and should be marked clearly.

Is connecting my phone to mobile data enough?

Only for tasks performed on that connected phone. The printer PC also needs internet access to receive cloud print jobs, and it must still be able to reach its printer.

Does a phone hotspot fix a cloud service outage?

No. A hotspot is a backup for the branch's internet connection.
