WhatsApp for restaurants: what works and what breaks
On a Friday shift, two staffers both reply “on it” to the same WhatsApp customer, while another message with the delivery address sits unread.

Nexara is a restaurant order and operations platform built in Amman, Jordan. It gives your restaurant a branded ordering site beside WhatsApp conversations. WhatsApp can answer questions and send customers there, but Nexara does not send WhatsApp order notifications. Start with a WhatsApp conversation with the founder, then link your ordering page.
What works when a restaurant uses WhatsApp?
WhatsApp works well as a conversation channel. A customer can ask whether chicken shawarma is available, request the menu, send a location, or ask when the branch closes. Your team can answer in Arabic or English and share a direct link to the restaurant's ordering site.
It also works for support. Nexara has a WhatsApp conversation inbox for call-center roles, where staff can open chats by phone number and load the conversation history. Nexara's own support is handled through WhatsApp and email during Amman hours. The founder, Issa Al-Dalu, answers support questions.
Use WhatsApp for the conversation and the ordering site for the order. The site collects the selected items and checkout details. Nexara's branded site supports cash on delivery or pickup, online card payment through HyperPay when enabled, and pay at the counter for dine-in.
- Answer menu and branch questions in WhatsApp.
- Send a link to the correct ordering page.
- Use the ordering site to collect the full order.
- Use Nexara's order board to manage orders from the website and other channels.
- Keep WhatsApp available for questions and support.
Why do WhatsApp restaurant orders break?
A WhatsApp chat is a stream of messages, not a structured order record. Customers write items in different ways, change quantities halfway through the conversation, forget a modifier, or send an address in a separate message. Staff then retype the details into another screen or write them on paper.
Ambiguity causes trouble. “Two meals like last time” only works if the staff member can find the right customer and remembers the order. Ownership causes another failure: one employee thinks another person confirmed the order, so the kitchen never receives a clear ticket.
During busy service, a new WhatsApp message can appear below a delivery question, a missed call, and an image of a location pin. The customer sees a blue tick. The branch sees a pile of conversations.
| WhatsApp problem | What the restaurant needs instead |
|---|---|
| Items described in free text | A menu with products, modifiers and prices |
| Address sent separately | A checkout that collects customer and delivery details |
| Staff retype the order | One order record on the restaurant's order board |
| Chat gets buried | Order history and searchable customer records |
| Customer asks for updates | A customer-facing order tracking link |
How should WhatsApp connect to Nexara?
Customers need one short path: WhatsApp message, ordering link, checkout, kitchen ticket. The link should open your Nexara Website, not a screenshot of a menu or a long list of items typed into chat. The site is generated from the restaurant menu. Free uses a name.nexaratech.io subdomain; a verified custom domain is available on paid plans.

When the customer completes the order on the site, it joins the same live order queue as website, app, table QR, Talabat and Careem orders. Nexara can print the ticket in Arabic on a standard ESC/POS thermal printer, with English on the same ticket when needed.
Staff can search the order board or order history instead of scrolling through a personal phone. The customer record can include the phone number, addresses and past orders.
- Create or confirm the menu, prices, modifiers and branch availability in Nexara.
- Copy the branded ordering-site link into your WhatsApp business profile and saved replies.
- Use a saved reply that tells customers to order through the link.
- Answer special questions in chat, then return to the link for the order.
- Check the order board and printed ticket before preparing the order.
How does Nexara handle WhatsApp conversations and phone orders?
Nexara relates to WhatsApp in two practical ways. WhatsApp can be the human front door, where your team answers questions and shares the restaurant's ordering link. Nexara support also uses WhatsApp so the restaurant can speak directly with the Nexara team.
Inside Nexara, the WhatsApp module is a conversation tool for call-center roles. Staff can list chats, open a chat by phone number and load its history. The call center lets an agent search by phone number, see saved addresses and past orders, and place a phone order.
If your team converts a WhatsApp conversation into a phone order, the agent should place it through the call-center screen so it reaches the live order board and can print for the kitchen. The call center is a Pro-plan feature.
See the Nexara features overview, Nexara demo, and Nexara contact page for setup options. The WhatsApp and Excel orders guide explains why messages and spreadsheets become difficult to control as volume grows.
What should a Jordan restaurant set up first?
Set up one branch and one clear ordering link first. Nexara is built in Amman and its live deployments are in Jordan. The dashboard and storefront support Arabic and English, and pricing is in Jordanian dinar. There is a free plan, then paid plans per branch in Jordanian dinar; the current rates are one WhatsApp message away.
Add the link to your WhatsApp Business profile, greeting message and saved replies. Tell staff exactly when to send the link and when to answer manually. A customer asking about allergens or a missing item needs a person. A customer placing a normal order needs the menu and checkout.
Then test the complete path with a small internal order. Open WhatsApp from a second phone, ask for the menu, follow the link, place a pickup order, confirm that it appears on the order board, and check the printed ticket. Test the branch's address and opening hours as well.
- WhatsApp Business profile contains the ordering link.
- The link opens the correct branch menu.
- Prices and modifiers match the printed menu.
- Pickup and delivery instructions are clear.
- The test order appears on the Nexara board.
- The kitchen ticket prints in the required language.
- Staff know who answers chat during each shift.
When should a restaurant keep WhatsApp as the main order channel?
A very small branch with a low order volume may manage WhatsApp manually for a while. The cost is staff time and the risk of missing details. Once customers order from several channels, the branch needs one order queue and a reliable order record.
WhatsApp remains valuable even after the restaurant adds online ordering. Customers will still ask about delivery areas, menu items, allergens, opening hours and delayed orders. One chat window cannot reliably serve as the menu, checkout, kitchen ticket, customer record and reporting system.
Nexara gives the restaurant its own ordering site with zero commission on its own website, app and call-center orders. Talabat and Careem keep their own commissions on the orders they bring. The restaurant can use WhatsApp to bring customers to its own channel, then manage the completed order in Nexara.
If you also receive Instagram requests, the same principle applies: answer in the conversation, then send the customer to the ordering page. The Instagram orders guide covers that path.
What to remember
- Use WhatsApp for questions and human conversations, not as the restaurant's only order record.
- Send customers to a Nexara ordering page where the menu, checkout and customer details are structured.
- Keep WhatsApp as the conversation inbox; completed orders should enter through the ordering site or call center.
- The completed order appears on Nexara's board and can print in Arabic in the kitchen.
- Test one complete WhatsApp-to-checkout-to-kitchen path before promoting the link.
Questions people ask
Can a restaurant take orders through WhatsApp?
Yes, but WhatsApp works best as a conversation and referral channel. Send customers to the restaurant's ordering site so items, modifiers, address and payment details become a structured order.
Does Nexara send WhatsApp order notifications?
No. Nexara's WhatsApp module is a conversation inbox for call-center roles. Nexara does not send WhatsApp order notifications or customer messaging campaigns.
Can I put my Nexara ordering link on WhatsApp?
Yes. Add the branded ordering-site link to your WhatsApp Business profile, greeting message and saved replies. Customers can then order through the menu and checkout.
Can staff turn a WhatsApp conversation into a Nexara order?
Yes. The customer can follow the Nexara ordering link, or a staff member can place a phone order through Nexara's call-center screen.
What happens if a customer changes an order in WhatsApp?
Staff should update the order in Nexara or place a new call-center order, then confirm the final details with the customer. Do not rely on a chat message alone as the kitchen ticket.
Can Nexara support Arabic restaurant orders?
Yes. Nexara's dashboard and storefront support Arabic and English, and kitchen and receipt tickets can print in Arabic on standard ESC/POS thermal printers.
Who answers when a Nexara setup question comes up?
Nexara support is available through WhatsApp and email during Amman hours, in Arabic or English. Founder Issa Al-Dalu answers support questions.
